DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Capt. Shawn L. English, 35, of Westerville, Ohio, died Dec. 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.He was assigned to the 577th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Spencer, the older I get, the more I see the accuracy of the supertanker methaphor in reference to American public opinion.

I agree, in most respects, with your assessment, in American Prospect, of the ISG group's findings. Even if adopted in toto, I would give it no more than a 15% chance of success, and the likelihood that it will be adopted in toto by GWB verges on the infintesimal.

Nevertheless, I wonder if a "responsible" Democratic position wouldn't be to urge its adoption, as a last, best chance to salvage the situation. Then, and only then, when it is disregarded/fails could the supertanker of the public opinion of the electorate be ready for actual pullout proposals.
