nothing left inside:
Leaving aside any discussion of the Scott Thomas incident -- I don't know the truth of it -- Bill Kristol's column is typically egregious and disgusting. Anyone who knows anyone who works at TNR -- as Kristol does -- knows that its editors and writers, all of them, have absolutely no antipathy toward U.S. troops. None. I remember TNR book/CD/DVD drives for troops in Iraq. Regardless of what the investigation of Thomas determines, not a single TNR editor has any desire or motivation to portray the U.S. military as peopled by a band of marauding William Calleys. Kristol knows this extremely well.

Whatever disagreements I've had with Frank, I know from experience that he does not assign, approve or edit stories to cast aspersions on the military. Even subconsciously, he would not express any eagerness to publish Thomas's story for anything remotely approaching that reason. Kristol is wrapping himself in the mantle of people much braver and nobler than himself (and myself) to disguise his enormous strategic misjudgment. He's crying a river of crocodile tears. And he knows that the motives he's ascribed to TNR's editors are complete bullshit.

can i say:
On Tuesday at noon in D.C., this very worthy cause will be taken to the steps of the Supreme Court. In your city, it'll be on the steps of your local courthouse. Please attend if you can. (Via my mother)

This Tuesday, July 17 at noon, many major cities across the country will be participating in a national protest dubbed "CALL IT RAPE!" The purpose of the protest is to rally against the silencing of rape victims in response to an abominable ruling against rape survivors by Judge Cheuvront in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Judge issued a Court Order banning the victim, Tory Bowen, and prosecutors from using the words "victim," "assailant," "rape," "date rape drugs," "sexual assault kit," and "sexual assault nurse examiner." The judge suggested calling the crime "sex." A Lincoln protest and rally was organized by PAVE: Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment and was held on July 9 and July 11, 2007. On July 12, 2007 the Judge declared a mistrial, citing the protests as one of the reasons.

Angela Rose, PAVE's Executive Director said, "The irony of Judge Cheuvront's order for the mistrial is that yet again he is trying to ban free speech. It was his unconstitutional ruling that led the people to the streets in protest in the first place. This is causing national outrage and we must be the voice for all who have been silenced by violence." These protests will be held simultaneously across the country, and Rose is asking people from across the nation to show their support. Protesters are urged to congregate in front of their community County Courthouse at 12:00pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. Even if there are only a handful of people, take a photo and email it to: rallyagainstrape@yahoo.com "Protesters are asked to bring scarves or folded bandanas and tie them over their mouths to protest the silencing of rape victims," Angela explained. "We will be holding signs depicting the words Tory Bowen was not allowed to use in Court." She added, "We cannot stand idly by as our free speech is taken away from us and survivors of rape are re-victimized in the courtroom."

the real enemy, the real enemy:
Abu Sarhan -- a "general coordinator" between AQI and the remnants of the Zarqawi organization -- says the U.S. shouldn't immediately leave Iraq. An al-Qaeda affiliate wants the U.S. to stagger its departure. What a testimony to the franchise model of al-Qaeda: the thug considers himself, foremost, an Iraqi Sunni, rather than a member of a global jihadist movement. Iran is his real enemy, not the U.S., and he dreams the dreams of the genocidaire:

"I personally don't have a hatred of the American people, and I respect American civilization," he said. "They have participated in the progress of all the nations of the world. They invented computers. Such people should be respected. But people who are crying over someone who died 1,400 years ago" -- referring to Shiites and their veneration of a leader killed in the 7th century -- "these should be eliminated, to clear the society of them, because they are simply trash."

"The real enemy for the resistance is Iran and those working for Iran," he went on. "Because Iran has a feud which goes back thousands of years with the people of Iraq and the government of Iraq."

Been here forever, they just ain't let you know:
Permanence:

So the president has mapped out a best-case scenario for Iraq on Jan. 20, 2009, that would still see considerable numbers of U.S. troops on the ground, but in a different role. If events work out as Bush hopes, aides said, U.S. forces by then will have sharply reduced their mission, pulling out of sectarian combat and focusing instead on fighting al-Qaeda, guarding Iraq's borders and supporting Iraqi troops. Instead of operating under a U.N. mandate, the United States would negotiate an agreement with the Iraqi government for a smaller, long-term presence.

The American people voted in November 2006 to stay in Iraq forever.

One minute closer to the hour of your doom:
Just noting: via "Yglesiaa," Lara Logan reports that there's going to be a no-confidence parliamentary vote on Maliki scheduled for July 15. It so happens that on the 15th, in Washington, the Bush administration will deliver a progress report on Iraq to Congress. And the 15th will augur the second of two weeks of debate on several Iraq-related amendments offered to the defense bill. Pretty poor timing for Bush.

More substantially: the move against Maliki is mostly Sunni-based, despite widespread dissatisfaction with the premier. The so-called "Iraq Project" says it has the votes necessary to depose him. The Iraqi political process has never had that sort of stress placed on it. Would Maliki step aside if the vote actually goes the way the Project expects? And would the U.S. be forced, again, to portray the results of a sectarian purge -- which is what the no-confidence motion clearly is -- as the results of a legitimate political effort? The process tends to conflate the two, but the U.S. can hardly afford to concede that point, unless it's really prepared to abandon the process it largely created. And while my understanding is that U.S. officials in Baghdad find more hope in tribal politics outside of the capitol than with what happens inside the Green Zone, no one's ready to say the political order U.S. troops are dying to defend isn't salvageable. Diplomats better pray that the Iraq Project's math is wrong.
