destroy 2000 years of culture:
Tom Tancredo: If we go down, western civilization goes down.

The plays of Aristophenes. Gone. The theories of Liebniz. Gone. The souffle. Gone. All it takes is one craven politician's unwillingness to waterboard someone.

Very few will get the Atari Teenage Riot reference without googling.

Seriously, I've heard this cliche a lot--that the US is "the last, best hope for mankind/western civilization." I genuinely have no fucking clue what it means. If you really look at the big picture, we're all doing a lot better than before. We're richer and healthier; we have longer lives and better living conditions. We have the greatest War Machine of All Time, god help us. But I can't even figure out who's (realistically) threatening us. The biggest threats seem to be nuclear war (survivable), global warming (survivable), and infectious pandemic (maybe the most threatening). Even the ultimately irrational "overpopulation" arguments seem to have more logic than this.

I am genuinely perplexed by what kind of idiocy will stick in the minds of my moron countrymen.
